Hypnosis is defined in a fairly simple way - it is getting someone to accept a suggestion.

Simple right? Well, not quite. In order for hypnosis to work as hypnotherapy, not only does someone have to accept the suggestion from the hypnotherapist, they also have to believe it and want it.

Hypnosis works on a deeper level than just an ordinary conversation. There are two areas that the brain works with, or uses for thought. Crudely put, they are the conscious and the subconscious. Although the subconscious sounds a little derogatory, it simply means the area of the brain that stores all memories and where you do your deep thinking. The conscious is the area that enables you to react in real time, for example, with talking, moving and so on.

The subconscious is the area that you use when you're day dreaming, about to fall asleep, watching tv or a film and not being aware of what's going on around you, and so on. As the subconscious stores all your memories (although not always with pinpoint accuracy) it is the best place for a hypnotherapist to work with, to help client's achieve a change/improvement in lifestyle, work, or just in general.
